SHADOW IN THE MIRROR

Starring: Femi Jacobs, Peggy Ovire

Synopsis:
A woman spooked by visions of a ghost leads her to find a secret her husband has been hiding.

Review:
Jason (Femi Jacobs) had a hard time keeping a girlfriend. Every time he got close to them they would see a ghost lurking in his bedroom. The women ran for the hills and since it happened on more than one occasion, Jason knew the problem was not only him but it was in his home.

When he saw Cassie (Peggy Ovire) it was love at first sight. At first he made sure not to have sex with her in his home to avoid any ghost sightings. He planned to sell the house but changed his mind when he married Cassie and everything seemed fine. But then Cassie began to see the same apparition and she was terrified. It turned out to be a spirit hellbent on revenge.

Let’s Talk. When I first saw that Tissy Nnachi was directing this movie I wasn’t enthused but I continued watching because it starred Femi Jacobs. Turned out that I was pleasantly surprised not because it was outstanding but because it was painless to watch.

The movie is made up of a small cast with a simple story that offered some intrigue. It was fairly predictable because it wasn’t hard to figure out what the ghost was about but the story still managed to seduce because the pacing was fluid.

The message here is about karma. The main character conducted a heinous act and thought he could move on without paying the consequences but his past literally came back to haunt him.

By the end, the secret was revealed and Jason (Femi Jacobs) ended up in a wheel chair as a result. It was obviously the price he paid for his evil but the filmmakers should have effed him up a little more, maybe with huge scars and bandages to make it absolutely clear that he’ll be miserable for the rest of his life.

The one thing that stood out to me was how rude Cassie was when she met Jason. Is this a true reflection of Nigerian women? They certainly know how to shut a man down when they’re not interested. Also disturbing was how relentless Jason was even though he was being disrespected by Cassie.

The movie could have used some visual effects, especially where the ghost was concerned, but maybe budget constraints or lack of talent played a part in its absence.

Performances, audio, and video sufficed. RECOMMEND
