OVY’S VOICE

Starring: Bisola Aiyeola, Uche Ogbodo, Mofe Duncan

Synopsis:
A mute make-up artist is pursued by the son of her client but struggles to commit to the relationship due to deep rooted issues from her past.

Review:
Ovy (Bisola Aiyeola) hadn’t spoken a word in years. Instead, she communicated by handwriting notes to those she associated with. A superb make-up artist, she was all work and no dates until she met Annan (Mofe Duncan). They initially met under adverse terms and he turned out to be the son of one of her clients.

Annan pursued Ovy relentlessly and when he finally wore her down something stopped her from fully committing to the relationship.

Let’s Talk. This was not your typical drama. It’s written by Biodun Stephen and it was a refreshing change from the norm. The story involved a mute woman that attempted to live a normal life despite her issues. Little did we know, there were circumstances that led to her silence and we, the audience, got to watch her overcome them.

The best thing the filmmakers did was to provide subtitles for Ovy’s lines. Waiting for her to write responses would have slowed the story and subtitles forced a fluid pace.

At the core was suppressed emotions. Ovy, the main character, subconsciously buried trauma from her past and a key event caused her pain to manifest. Subconsciously, she suffered because she had yet to tackle the problem head on which, is a lesson for us, because sometimes we don’t realize a problem is controlling us.

The one disappointing scene was the one where Annan and Ovy were finally going to talk. Annan shared his personal life but the audience wasn’t privy to the conversation because the dialogue was superseded with music. Bummer! It felt like a rip-off because I, the audience, had an interest in getting to know him alongside Ovy.

Also, I couldn’t quite swallow the tragic circumstances surrounding Annan’s mother. It came out of nowhere, was too sudden, and could have been presented with more detail.

The most powerful scene came when Ovy’s issues hit the surface. It was a mouth gaping moment and so well played that it redefined the term movie climax. We all had to grapple with the truth simultaneously – Ovy, Annan, and us.

Performances? There was a compatible rapport between Bisola Aiyeola and Mofe Duncan and both interpreted their parts impeccably.

Technical stuff? Audio was satisfactory but video had issues with the text message captions which were difficult to read at times and should have been clearer.

Ovy had pre-made signs that she used to communicate with customers. One of them said “Thanks for Coming” – my sentiments for this movie. RECOMMEND
