DESPERATE MEASURES

Review:
Lee and Eva were in a hellish marriage. Actually, Eva (Nikka Samonas) was the one married while Lee (Ekow Smith-Asante) lived life as a player. In addition to the numerous women Lee slept with, he also physically abused Eva. Lee realized Eva was miserable and he had the nerve to encourage her to date.

She was reluctant at first but then took his advice and dated Michael (Kofi Adjorlolo). Michael was a patient at the hospital where she worked as a nurse. He was an older man but accomplished. Eva confided in him and he was more than willing to come to be there for her. She spent the weekends with him and Lee was aware of their time together since their marriage seemed to be an open one.

As reality set in it began to bother Lee that Eva had another man. Jealousy flared and Lee wanted her back but the problem was that Michael wasn’t willing to let Eva go.

Let’s Talk. This is love triangle…sort of. There were three characters involved but there were side players as well. To get to the point, this was a convoluted story. We have Lee, a married man who had flings while he was married. His wife knew of his notorious ways but she hung on hoping he would change.

When Eva decided to get another man we saw Lee turn into a crying wuss. That was very strange. I mean, who was this man? It was hard to relate to the character when he was presented as a callous dog that beat his wife. Then he decided he wanted her back but at the same time he continued sleeping with numerous women. So if Lee still had other women then what was he crying about?

The Lee character was confusing and the only way to connect to him was to label him insane which was not a condition established in the story. It’s one thing if his possessive nature wanted his wife back but to have him crying like a little b*tch was off-putting.

In addition to the poorly written Lee character, the story was crippled with slow pacing that ultimately led nowhere. There was also a senseless twist at the end and then it concluded with subtitles that conveyed the outcome of the characters.

One of the subtitles stated that one of the women was beaten to the point of losing an eye. Why would any writer want this to be the outcome of a story? What sense does that make? What is the audience supposed to feel from this information? Without listing all of the silly subtitles let’s just say that the writer’s narratives failed to give a meaningful sense of closure. Sigh…

Performances were decent. Nikki Samonas gave an understated performance and was careful not to overact. Kudos to Ekow Smith-Asante for tackling such a circuitous character.

The essence of the movie reflects the adage that states “you can dish it out but you can’t take it” and although the point was well received, the story itself required a better approach. EJECT
