TODAY’S WOMAN

Heart In Chains

Title: TODAY’S WOMAN (1 & 2)

Sequel: HEART IN CHAINS (1 & 2)

Starring:  Jackie Appiah, Kalsoume Sinare, Kafui Danku, Toosweet Annan

Synopsis

Rex carefully orchestrates pulling the strings in the lives of three women – his wife, daughter-in-law, and girlfriend.

Review:

This story commences with a decent plot. We have Rex, played by Toosweet Annan, who is married to Cecilia (Kalsoume Sinare), an older woman, for financial means. The marriage allowed him to take care of his blind girlfriend, who Cecilia believes is his sister.

Also masquerading as Rex’s sister is Phil (Kafui Danku) who is yet another girlfriend of Rex. Phil is a gold digger that blackmailed Cecilia some years ago when she cheating on her first husband with her now husband, Rex. Phil now blackmails Rex since she knows that the blind woman in the house is really his girlfriend and not his sister.

In walks Jeni (Jackie Appiah), Cecilia’s daughter, who arrived from America and moved into the house. She’s secretly a lesbian and develops a love/hate relationship with Rex. By the end, all relationships were revealed and there are a few casualties.

Let’s Talk. The problem with this movie is poor story execution. It should have ended with the prequel. The sequel draaagged on unnecessarily. Pointless dialogue and overacting caused it to suffer. “How dare you? How dare you?” That line was used excessively and made the movie seem like a really bad soap opera. The second most popular line was “get out!” Sigh…

In terms of story, the reasons for Cecilia and Laura’s ailments were never revealed. Also, in one scene, Phil caught Rex and Jeni (his wife’s daughter) in bed and then flaunted a blackmail tape in their faces. Why didn’t Rex or Jeni just grab it from her? It was two of them against just her! Ugh… And did Jeni really have sex in her mother’s bed with her mother’s husband?  How tacky. Was there even a shred of respect for her mother?

Calista Okoronkwo played the blind girlfriend and she had a heightened sense of smell and magically recognized expensive perfumes by name. How could she be an expert on perfume when she never leaves the house? She was never shown in a store sampling fragrances so how is this skill possible? And what was the point of the character having this ability? It certainly wasn’t used for anything story related.

Jackie Appiah played a lesbian. Unfortunately, the homosexual relationship was not convincing. Sorry. As for performances on a whole? Let’s not go there. Too many bad actors to name.

In further review of this movie, the DVD cover reads “Today’s WomAn.”  When the movie played, the title read “Today’s WomEn.” Regardless of the official title, the name is not befitting as the story not what is expected.

Were the characters supposed to be a reflection of today’s women? Hmm, let’s see, there’s Laura, the blind girl; Jeni the bi-sexual; Cecilia the wheel chair bound, wealthy cougar; and Phil the money hungry, pole dancing, blackmailer. Yep, sounds like today’s women. Sigh…

Unfortunately, the story had potential but it went down the drain. EJECT
