WINE FOR CHOCOLATES

Synopsis:

A young couple sets out to dupe their boss out of millions but the plan goes astray when one of them confesses.

Review:

Daniel and Isabel (Majid Michel & Lerato Modise) are young couple that planned to marry. Daniel worked as a chef for Dare Lawson (Femi Jacobs) and Isabel was unemployed. Her dream job was to work for an art gallery but she couldn’t find work in her field.

Dare Lawson was a wealthy businessman and he happened to be in search of a personal assistant. Daniel saw it as an opportunity for Isabel and he coaxed her into taking the job.

Dare was instantly impressed with Isabel but when Daniel introduced her, he failed to mention that they were engaged, therefore, Dare was led to believe they were just friends. Daniel and Isabel kept their relationship a secret and as a consequence it left the door open for Dare to pursue Isabel.

Isabel and Dare spent several late evenings working together in his home. Dare developed a personal interest in her while Daniel succumbed to jealousy.

As time went on Dare placed his trust in Isabel and as his assistant she was privileged to his personal banking information. She shared his passwords with Daniel and the two devised a scheme to withdraw enough money from his account to leave the country. The plan went into action but one of them suffered a guilty conscience.

Let’s talk. This is a drama. It started off slow and then picked up speed. When Isabel and Daniel discussed their financial issues, Isabel encouraged Daniel to expand his horizons. He wasn’t quite ready to shift his paradigms and they continued to struggle with one salary in the household. Isabel then took a job that propelled their desires into criminal activity.

Dare was a successful businessman that employed both of them and he also appeared to be a wine connoisseur. While under his employ he enlightened Isabel to the various wines that paired with chocolate. As she spent time with her rich boss it seemed that she had more in common with him than Daniel. They were on the verge of romance but then the story switched gears and Isabel and Daniel cooked up a scheme to wire Dare’s money into their accounts.

The writing was fresh yet incomplete. What’s odd is that there are so many bad movies that go on and on forever and here’s a fairly decent movie that regrettably had only one part. It ended unexpectedly and the outcome of the characters was displayed in writing onscreen.

The story was also a little choppy and lacked transition scenes. For instance, when one of the characters suffered guilt, we didn’t see that emotion developing. The story just cut to the scene where the confession was made.

As for performances, they were on point. Majid rarely disappoints and Femi Jacobs perfectly fit the bill as the wealthy and worldly Mr. Lawson. Newcomer, Lerato Modise played Isabel and she gave a respectable performance as well.

The movie was short by Nollywood standards and it’s conclusion left a lot to be desired however, it’s not a movie that one would suffer through. The story had the potential to be more but hey, it is what it is. RECOMMEND
