VICTIM

Starring:  Jackie Appiah, Prince David Osei, Christabel Ekeh, Toosweet Annan

Synopsis:

A young man that was left to fend for his siblings borrows money from a wealthy man to pay for school fees but it’s his younger sister that ultimately paid the price of the loan.

Review:

Since the death of both parents, Michael (Prince David Osei) took the responsibility of caring for his younger siblings, Mercy and Ben. When it came to the final semester, Mercy (Christabel Ekeh) and Ben (Toosweet Annan) hadn’t paid their school fees. Michael wanted to see them complete their studies so he borrowed money from Jerry, a very wealthy man.

Michael didn’t have the money when Jerry (Paul Wilson) tried to collect it months later. Jerry was adamant about getting his money back and was willing to accept cash or in kind – meaning a night with  Mercy.

Michael wound up behind bars when he assaulted Jerry for attempting to rape Mercy. In order for Michael to be set free, Jerry demanded that Mercy sleep with him, which she reluctantly did of free will. Debt paid in full? Not quite. Jerry still demanded money after having his way with Mercy.

They movie went into another plot where Ben (Toosweet Annan) went “clubbing” with his schoolmate, Priscilla (Jackie Appiah).  He met a woman and had a one-night stand.  He woke up the next morning to a note where the woman announced she was HIV positive. With no hope left for life, Ben volunteered to go to jail in place of Michael when Michael once again attacked Jerry for taking advantage of Mercy.

The story took a completely different direction when it ventured into Ben’s career as a doctor. He became the Medical Director of a new facility and basically killed off all of his patients. Sigh….

The back-story revealed that he had issues, mental and with women, and he sought revenge on any woman that wronged him. Other subplots focused on the power struggle between Priscilla and her father’s lover and the unexpected feud between Mercy and her best friend.

Let’s Talk. This movie contained a million different stories and was disgusting on many levels. From having to watch an older man force himself on a young woman, to his maid watching him literally drag the woman into the house to rape her and doing nothing about it, was super tacky.

There’s a scene where Michael barges into Jerry’s house to save Mercy but it’s too late. He storms right past Mercy who is hunched over in pain and leaves her there to go find Jerry. Apparently, he was more concerned about beating up Jerry than tending to her wellbeing.

From the loan/rape saga, to Ben’s fake HIV status, to Ben’s imprisonment case, to his mental/women issues, to Jerry’s womanizing, to campus drama, and the competition between Priscilla and Jane, this movie was all over the road. It was more a film comprised of short stories than one complete movie.

A portion of this movie is very similar to the Nollywood movie titled “Victims” where an unscrupulous doctor took advantage of his patients. Obviously someone didn’t do their homework and even gave this movie the same title. Tsk, tsk. Some distributors had to change the title from “VictimS” to “Victim” to avoid confusion.

Performances here were okay, nothing to write about. The best part of the movie? When the ending credits rolled. A resounding EJECT
