THE FIGURINE

Title: THE FIGURINE ARAROMIRE (1 – 3)

Starring: Ramsey Nouah, Kunle Afolayan, Omoni Oboli, Funlola Aofiyebi

Synopsis:

A mysterious sculpture found in the woods seemed to have had an effect on the lives of the two men that discovered it.

Review:

Two friends find a sculpted deity in the woods while on duty for national services. Folklore behind the figure claimed it’s a goddess of luck that produces seven years of prosperity followed by seven years of despair.

When Sola (Kunle Afolayan) took the doll home, life seemed to manifest accordingly. Seven years later, life was grand. He and his wife Mona (Omoni Oboli) were happily married and were expecting their second child. His friend, Femi (Ramsey Nouah) dated Linda (Funlola Aofiyebi) but was secretly in love with Mona.

Life took a turn for the worst when Femi lost his job, Sola’s company stock plummeted, and Mona lost both of her children.

Let’s Talk. “The Figurine” is story telling at it’s finest. Ramsey Nouah plays Femi, a nerd who is in love with his former classmate, Mona (Omoni Oboli). They were both assigned to Araromire for duty where he planned to confess his love for her. He never got the chance and she wound up marrying his best friend, Sola.

While on assignment Femi and Sola came across the figurine and when Sola took it home their lives experienced severe ups and downs.

The story is creative and a definite change from the norm. It’s thought provoking and the audience is forced to question whether the events in the story are just life, a coincidence, or the curse of the figurine.

The film also offers a certain authenticity regarding Nigerian culture via the names of the characters, displays of art, food, music and dialect.

Performances here are top notch. Ramsey Noauh is exquisite as his character transforms from introvert to violent. Omoni Oboli does a fine job playing Mona who is a normal woman at first but then lost it when she believed the figurine was responsible for her life spiraling out of control.

Kunle Afolayan directed and acted in the movie and it’s one of those rare occurrences where an Actor/Director does both successfully. Excellent. RECOMMEND
