Review:

In “Playing Safe” it’s the women who are players instead of men. First up is Nana (Martha Ankomah) who had the most boyfriends but ultimately decided on Alex (IK Ogbonna).  After they became engaged Alex learned that Nana was seeing other people during their courtship. He never confronted her about it which doesn’t make sense. He simply believed the gossip he heard and took action.

The second woman is Vivian, played by Ini Edo. She dated and became engaged to two men who not only knew each other but were also roommates. The men had no idea that they were engaged to the same woman and this led to the chaos.

Tonto Dikeh rounded out the cast and played Ene, a woman that fornicated with her boss while she was engaged to someone else. When her fiancé found out about the affair, she didn’t quit the job, she instead slept with even more men. Sigh…

Let’s Talk. In a world where men are usually the players, this movie displayed that women can play too. It tells the story of three women and their “sexcapades.”

Vivian was reluctant to cheat at first but she was convinced to always have a “plan B” and wound up with two men. Ene was happily engaged but slept with her boss for job stability. The third girl, Nana, juggled a few boyfriends but when she finally decided to commit, it was too late.

Of the three scenarios, the only relationship that made any sense was Nana and Alex. Nana actually stopped seeing other men and got serious about Alex. If he had only demanded answers from her when he questioned her loyalty he would have learned that she was actually true to him once she decided that he was “the one.”

In the scene where Alex learned of Nana’s transgressions, he wore dark sunglasses. This was poor direction because it cheated the audience of seeing his facial expressions at a pivotal point in his role.

As for Vivien, how is it possible that she could wind up engaged to two men that knew each other and were actually roommates? Highly unlikely. Furthermore, how could she be engaged to a man and she had never set foot in his home? C’mon. Get real.

Unfortunately, none of the women in this drama came out on top.  There should have been at least one happy ending between the three couples. Also, none of the leading women were in any scenes together which was disappointing.

The performances sufficed however, “Playing Safe” played it safe and didn’t have the layers of drama and story needed to recommend it. EJECT
