LOOKING BACK

Starring: Ruth Kadiri, Alexx Ekubo, Uzor Arukwe

Synopsis:
A married couple of four years resort to desperate measures in order to have a baby.

Review:
Chike and Joy (Alexx Ekubo & Ruth Kadiri) were immersed in shame because they were a childless. They received tremendous pressure from their in-laws so they decided to finally seek medical attention.

Test results revealed that Chike was sterile. He was embarrassed by it and he didn’t want their parents to know the truth so he came up with the idea for Joy to get pregnant for another man. She was reluctant at first but then she went through with it. Happily ever after? Not quite.

Let’s Talk. Here we go with another story about a couple that couldn’t conceive a child. It brought back memories of old movies like “Mary the Prostitute” and “Stolen Pregnancy.” These movies also featured couples that couldn’t reproduce and shame provoked unconventional solutions. So the premise certainly wasn’t new but the movie was on fire from the jump nonetheless.

The in-laws were annoyed that they were yet to be grandparents, Chike was at odds with his wife and also experienced issues at the office. Clearly, the couple never heard of artificial insemination or considered other alternatives so Joy (Ruth Kadiri) actually had sex with someone else in order to hide Chike’s shame. His past caught up with him but she paid the price. How fair is that?

As for story structure, the movie abruptly ended leaving a feeling of emptiness as well as unanswered questions. Also, there weren’t enough scenes with the baby which, was the a pivotal point in the story! You would think the filmmakers would show the couple doting over this baby that they so desperately wanted!

There was a bit of humor, which was appreciated. It was ticklish that the writer flipped the script when it came to the bedroom scenes. At first it was Joy coming onto Chike and being rejected and then it was her turn to play hard to get.

This movie sought to portray the struggles of infertility. When a baby finally came to fruition for the family it just forged more chaos. Chike wasn’t the biological father and his wife slept with another man. These crucial issues gave actor, Alexx Ekubo, a juicy role to play. Speaking of which, he was well matched with Ruth Kadiri and both were authentic.

The bottom-line is that infertility isn’t always a woman’s fault and medical testing is necessary for both parties. The movie concluded by stating that husbands shouldn’t “push wives to do what they can’t handle.” A more appropriate message would have been one regarding reproductive matters and repercussions of infidelity. RECOMMEND
