HOUSE GIRL LOVER

Starring: Seun Akindele, Bayray McNwizu, Ikay Ogbonna

Synopsis:

A young woman in search of an office job resorts to working as a maid when she was no longer welcome at her temporary living arrangement.

Review:

Debby (Bayray McNwizu) arrived in town with nothing but her dreams and her wish for a job. She was a houseguest of her long time friend, Ginika (Yvonne Jegede). Debby thought Ginika would hook her up with a job but instead Ginika covertly conspired against her.

Emerson (Ikay Ogbonna) was a friend of Ginika’s that was very attracted to Debby. He paid Ginika to hook him up with Debby but the plan went astray when Debby wasn’t the least bit interested in him. From then on, Ginika’s attitude toward Debby changed for the worst and Debby came home one day to find her things packed.

Desperation for work set in and Debby responded to an ad for a house girl. She landed the job with the very wealthy, Charles (Seun Akindele). It just so happened that Charles was Ginika’s boss in the office. Charles was recently dumped by his girlfriend and he treated Debby with a rather somber and stern attitude.

Debby found herself working beyond the call of duty when Charles used her to make his ex-girlfriend jealous. It worked for a bit until his ex-girlfriend’s envy caused her to become vindictive.

Let’s Talk. This is a drama that felt like a mystery due to its overextended story set up. It started out with retarded pacing that caused the story to be bland.

Trying to comprehend the core of the drama was difficult as there were quite a few plots going on. Charles wanted his girlfriend back, Ginika plotted against Debby, Lina was hell bent on revenge, Emerson was determined to sleep with Debby, and then we had Preye (Daniel K. Daniel) who seemed like he would become Debby’s boyfriend but didn’t.

All of the storylines intertwined but ultimately led nowhere. Ginika’s motive was pointless, Preye just disappeared, Emerson died, and just when we thought Charles would confess his love for Debby, he admitted that his feelings for her were strictly platonic.

So what was the point of the story? God knows. We don’t even know where Debby came from or what caused her circumstances.

Performances? I came away impressed with Bayray McNwizu’s performance. She was captivating as the inert and financially strapped house girl. The cast wasn’t the problem though; it’s the story that needed improvement.

The drama did have some humorous moments such as when Emerson thought Debby was engaged to Charles. He was crushed at the news and his reaction was funny. There was also a ludicrous scene when Lina lost all control.

At the end of the day, “House Girl Lover” was like a broken cyclone in that it never made it to the top because it was stuck at the bottom. EJECT
