FORGETTING JUNE

Starring: Majid Michel, Mbong Amata, Beverly Naya, Blossom Chukwujekwu

Synopsis:

A happily married man suffers a tragic loss when he believes his wife died in an accident but later finds himself in a predicament when he falls in love with her best friend.

Review:

The synopsis above is the basic gist of the story. When Eddie (Majid Michel) received the news that his wife, June (Mbong Amata) was dead he went  into a depression. He became anti-social, he couldn’t focus at work, and he basically couldn’t move forward.

Tobi (Beverly Naya), his wife’s best friend, took it upon herself to look after him. She nurtured him and introduced him to dance as a way to relieve stress.

Eddie and Tobi connected through dance and they spent time together and relied on each other. On the evening that they celebrated winning a grant for Tobi’s dance group, their friendship progressed into something more. After a glass of wine seemed to loosen them up they shared a kiss and then a bed.

Some time later, Tobi and Eddie married and Tobi was carrying their first child. One day, June reappeared out of nowhere and shocked them. Through flashbacks we learned that after her car accident, June was found injured on the road by a doctor, played by Blossom Chukwujekwu. He personally took care of her in his home.

When June regained consciousness she realized that she had lost her memory. When she finally remembered her past she went home to find Eddie and found him married to her best friend. Eddie suddenly found himself with two wives and no solution.

Let’s Talk. First off, I did not believe the notion that Eddie and June were blissfully married. The two lacked chemistry and were a total and complete mismatch. It was obvious that Tobi and Eddie would become lovers so no surprise there but these two lacked chemistry as well.  Love scenes with Majid and both women were cringe worthy. Yuk.

As for story comments, Tobi was a part of a dance group. When her lead dancer couldn’t make an important audition, she insisted that Eddie, who doesn’t dance, replace him. If the audition were so important then why on earth would she want someone who doesn’t dance professionally to replace her lead dancer? That made no sense at all.

The next thing we know, Eddie is at the studio practicing dance moves. I can appreciate Majid going beyond his comfort zone but I must say that watching him dance was hilarious.

Another aspect of the story worth mentioning was the fact that the doctor would take the wounded June to his home to care for her instead of the hospital. Who does that? Supposedly she reminded him of his deceased ex-girlfriend but so what?

The audience is supposed to believe that he instantly fell in love with her. C’mon. That’s so absurd. As a doctor he should know that the proper protocol is to take an accident victim to the damn hospital.

So June got her memory back when she hit her head on a pipe? Are they kidding me? Seriously? Also, for Eddie and June to blame their behavior on alcohol is not only an overly used excuse but also a lame one.

The dumbest line in the movie is after June’s return when she’s living in the house with Eddie and Tobi. When June and Tobi have a moment together, June asked Tobi “so was he as good in the sack as I used to claim?” Whaaat? I think a better question would have been “would you get the hell out of MY house?” Sigh….

I normally don’t comment on hair, costumes, and makeup but I have to ask where was the hair and make-up department when it came to June’s hair? Her hair was pure chaos and didn’t look good not even once.

As for wardrobe, Beverly Naya needed a racerback bra or a strapless one. Under no circumstances should a woman’s bra be purposely exposed. Underwear is called underwear for a reason. Women’s bras have evolved. We have clear straps, multi-straps, strapless, push-ups, you name it. There’s no excuse for this.

Performances? It wasn’t the greatest. I believe that Majid Michel is a superbly skilled actor but even his talent couldn’t resurrect this production. Thankfully, Abiola Segun-Williams, who played Eddie’s mother, brought some spark to the drama.

Needless to say, “Forgetting June” is already a distant memory. It was reminiscent of a bad soap opera. The love interests didn’t mesh and the mediocre script along with subpar acting caused the story to feel artificial. EJECT

This was an accidental discovery on Netflix, and so glad I did. The acting is not terrific, the sound is definitely not terrific, but the underlying intention of the film is beautiful. There’s an American audience now introduced to Nollywood, and I’ve asked Netflix to start carrying more of them!

      Hey RomDeussen,

Thank you for sharing your honest feedback. The movie has gotten mixed reviews so it’s always interesting to hear new opinions. I’m thrilled that Nollywood movies have been placed on a platform where mainstream audiences can discover the African Movie industry. Requesting to see more of them was the best thing you could have done. As far as sound goes, it’s a common issue with African movies but I’m hopeful it will improve. All the best!

I really enjoyed this movie, I just don’t like the fact that he got with her best friend. Where’s the loyalty lol… anywho it’s just like the American movie I do… I did!

    • TalkAfricanMovies

I agree with you as far as the best friend crap. That seems to be a trend with African movies these days and it’s so played out.

I enjoyed the movie. I think Majid Michel is a good actor. However, Mbong Amata is in need of some serious acne cream and hair product. Her face and hair was horrible…. Although this movie had all the characteristics of a low budget movie, I still enjoyed it.

    • TalkAfricanMovies

Hey Suze, I agree that Majid is good. As for Mbong, she really is pretty. There was obviously a problem with the make-up department.

Hi Tracey, Netflix.com has it. That’s the only other place that I know of at this time. Please be sure to comment once you watch it. All the best!

  • Anne-marie

I enjoyed the film although the acting was a bit rubbish and the storyline was far fetched but still entertaining

    • TalkAfricanMovies

Anne-Marie, far-fetched is right but that wasn’t even the problem because there are far-fetched movies that are actually good. When a movie is implausible there’s got to be other aspects that we can connect with and that’s where this movie for me failed. There are many people that actually loved this movie so hey, to each his own. Movies affect people differently and that’s what keeps the industry interesting.

  • patrice

I actually liked the movie..His chemistry with both women was good to me, especially when he and Tobi were kissing..I saw it on Netflix by the way..I’m glad I was able to see it..
