BEAUTIFUL RUINS

Starring: Christabel Ekeh, John Dumelo, Eddie Nartey, Fred Amugi

Synopsis:
A young actress experiences life’s highs and lows as she devolves from film star to convict and later diagnosed with a fatal illness.

Review:
Abynah (Christabel Ekeh) was riding high as a film actress until she caught her director/boyfriend cheating on her. A confrontation led to violence and as a result she spent six years in prison.

Upon her return to society she attempted to resume her film career but it was challenging as some directors wanted sex in exchange for a part while others didn’t want to be associated with an ex-convict.

Making matters worse, Abynah was diagnosed with a fatal disease which led her to live in the village to await death. She sunk into a state of despair but life looked up when the possibility of love surfaced with Kojo (John Dumelo). Kojo was a doctor looking to build a new hospital in the area but he was carrying an emotional load of his own.

Let’s Talk. This is a drama about a beautiful dying actress that fell from grace after she accidentally killed her director/boyfriend. It mildly explores the film industry but at the core it was about the loss of hope.

The story reflects how one mistake can have life altering consequences as the main character went from fame and fortune to a life of imprisonment. A career after prison certainly has it challenges but hope does come around if one isn’t too caught up in despair to see it.

The plight of the main character could be anyone’s life not just that of a famous actress. The question becomes how does one deal with life’s curveballs? In this movie it was love that provided a glimmer of hope. The love interests suffered from personal issues but romance seemed to make life bearable.

In a nutshell, the movie was neither spellbinding or humdrum. It was successful thanks to Christabel Ekeh, who created genuine tension as her character’s sense of self worth deteriorated.

What was missing was Kojo’s (John Dumelo) background. If time was spent on creating a flashback about his brother’s love life then how come there were no scenes that pertained to his past life? That was a gaping hole in the story.

As for performances, Christabel Ekeh has once again paired with John Dumelo as a love interest. Her performance showcased her ability to bare her soul whether she’s playing the destitute or glamor girl.

The ending was subtle and sad with an unexpected twist. A subtitle preceding the credits stated “no matter what don’t give up hope.” These are the words the filmmaker wants you to remember in times of adversity. RECOMMEND
